a masterpiece of Russian architecture

привет (privet)
Hi!

First, Congratulation to Vladimir Putin as a Russian Prime Minister after winning the election :)

The Russian Federation is the largest of the 21 republics that make up the commonwealth of independent states. it occupies most of eastern Europe and north Asia. There are over 160 different ethnic groups and indigenous peoples in Russia and all contribute to the cultural diversity of the country.

Handicraft, like Dymkovo toy and Matryoshka dolls represent an important aspect of Russian folk culture. Ethnic Russian clothes include kaftan for men and sarafan for women, with lapti and valenki as common shoes. and the russian cuisine widely uses fish, poultry, mushrooms, berries and honey. Black bread is rather popular in Russia, compared to the rest of the world.

fun fact:

* Vodka was introduced in Russia in the period from 1448-1474. less than 100 years later the first "czar tavern" was set up in Moscow.

* the most expensive Russian white wine "Livadiya" (1891) was sold by auction for 2900 GBP

* there is the closest point between Russia and America that is only 4km long.

Saint Basil's Cathedral

The Cathedral of the protection of most holy theotokos on the moat, popularly known as Saint Basil's Cathedral, is a Russian Orthodoz church build in 1555-61. Saint Basil's Cathedral was primarily build by "Ivan the Terrible", to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600.

The cathedral was given the nickname "St.Basil's" after the "holy fool" Basil the Blessed (1468-1552) who at that time, was hugely popular with the Muscovites masses and even with Ivan, the Terrible, himself.

The design of Saint Basil's Cathedral comprises of nine individual chapels. Each of the nine chapels has a unique onion dome, reflecting a victorius assault on the city of Kazan. The cathedral was designed in such a way that it would reflect an architectural representation of the new jerusalem - the heavenly kingdom described in the book of revelation of St. John, the divine. The design is based on deep religious symbolism. The eight-point star of Saint Basil's Cathedral is symbolical of the christian church, as a guiding light to mankind, showing us the way to the heavenly jerusalem. it also represents Virgin Mary.

The cathedral is fairly considered to be a monument of architecture and construction art of world value. Till now the cathedral is a branch of the state historical museum. The first divine servise was held in October, 14, 1991, however regular devine services are not made.
